heroism
this morning I awoke earlier than you
to the sound of raindrops hitting our roof.
you were disturbed, dreaming I think.
barely breathing, I watched you closely.
you kicked and moved your arms,
defending yourself from another day.
i leaned in to kiss your forehead
and heard you murmur in distress.
i whispered back not to worry
as I sat on the bed, stroking your hair.
if I can comfort you, even for a moment
in the last bit of a bad dream
before the alarm goes off
and you wake up for work,
maybe I can rescue you
from just another day.

this is about a woman i dated in 2003 or 2004. my parents loved her. she was tall, 5'10" and loved to wear heels. i always felt a little odd when she was taller than me.
