How can I relax?
How can I relax when everything around is crashing,
you ask with your face buried in a pillow.
Your arm resting lightly on mine, twitches.
You pull the sheets back and ask yourself
how I can sleep when I’m busier than you.
Slipping out of bed with the comforter in tow,
you light a cigarette by the window.
The dog pads over and lies at your feet
while you check your appointment book.
i can see your silhouette in the wardrobe mirror.
Through half closed eyes I see you
bite your nails and scratch the dog’s ears.
I hear your nervous laugh and that little sigh
that comes when you’ve figured something out,
while I pretend to sleep.
I’m not so smart, you say as you slide into bed
pulling the comforter across us.
The dog wanders back to his bed
and I move closer to you.
How could I relax without you?
