The Right Decision
We made the right decision
to live our lives
separately.
Still there are times
in the morning
when I wake in a bed too large for me.
At night,
when I sit on a couch too long for me,
watching the walls
you painted,
the colors
you chose.
Making dinner
for one.
I see your bike in the garage
and your things in the attic,
all left behind
like our relationship.
You were my love
until you weren’t
We still talk.
You watch the dog
when I can’t.
I am indebted to you
though you would never agree.
You were there for me
when so many weren’t
I would do anything for you
because of all these things.
I want you to be happy
like we once were,
but on your own
as you prefer.
I write this alone
in the room we once shared.
We made the right decision.
And we live our lives
separately.
But I still care
and would do anything
for you.

i have to be careful about this one. i was in a long term relationship that didn't work out and i'm still very close to the other half of that relationship.
