Happiness

I decided to sit down
and write a happy poem.
So much of what I write is sad
or just depressing.
Each is a piece of my life
and taken as a whole
they can be overwhelming.
But there have been so many
happy moments in my life.
I was adopted by a loving family
at the age of seven
after two years In an orphanage.
I was loved
and still am.
I made my first and greatest friend
that year.
And we are friends still.
I kissed a girl in high school
and she kissed me back
and we are friends even now.
But we don’t kiss anymore.
I spent summers golfing
and swimming,
and fishing.
I learned so much
that I still know today.
I did well in high school
and my parents were proud
of me.
I went to a good college
and made another good friend
that I still see.
I did well in college
and my parents were proud
of me.
I took a good job
and worked hard
and traveled
and made more friends
that I still know.
I left an easy life
for an adventure
that changed me.
And I am still
a changed man.
I moved and grew
and made more friends
that still see me.
I fell in love
so many times
and learned so much
from each time.
I have had my share
of difficulties
all along the way,
but I am a very lucky person
and no one problem
was insurmountable.
I have had a very happy life
if you look at it just right.
I’ve been challenged,
but I never gave up
and that has made all the difference.
