Touching the fire

I focus so much
of my attention
On an impossible situation.
I should just back away
And stop pushing
For something
That will never happen.
But there are so many
Tiny moments
Of false hope
And temporary joy
That I return
Again and again
To the fire
That continues
To burn me.
